Historic Downtown Whitby

Whitby is growing in popularity as a place to shop, dine, play and live.  About 36,000 vehicles enter the core daily.  Minutes away from the waterfront, Highway 401 and the Whitby GO Station, residents and visitors alike enjoy a variety of shops and services including the popular Farmers' Market and Whitby History Museum

The Downtown continues to be revitalized with various aesthetic improvements, including:

  • A recent $1.3 million streetscape beautification project at the 'Four Corners'
  • The construction of the Central Public Library and Civic Square, a $19.5 million investment
  • Renovations and enlargement to the historic Centennial Building's community centre and theatre

Historic Downtown Brooklin

Downtown Brooklin, one of two historic downtowns in Whitby, is a vibrant and active centre for a rapidly growing, close knit village. Located at the intersection of Highways 12 and 7, Downtown Brooklin is close to the future Highway 407 expansion and Highway 401 link.

Downtown Brooklin services the local community with approximately 100 quaint shops, restaurants, and services. Several community events are held in Downtown Brooklin such as Harvest Festival, Music in the Park, Brooklin Spring Fair and Christmas in the Village, drawing approximately 40,000 people Downtown.

Recent developments in the core area include:

  • The Brooklin Community Centre and Library, a $14 million investment
  • A 31,000 sq. ft. commercial project, including 19 townhome units
  • The East Village Common Plaza
  • The Brooklin Towne Centre Plaza

Downtown Facade Grant Program

The Town of Whitby offers a Downtown Façade Grant Program for commercial property owners/tenants who wish to improve the exterior appearance of their buildings in both historic Downtowns. Since 2005, Whitby has funded 65 applications, representing over $250,000 invested by the Town, as grant money.
